Launching in Lajitas, this 21-mile section of the Rio Grande is the most popular canyon float in the Big Bend, and for good reason! At their tallest, the lime-stone walls of Santa Elena Canyon tower 1500 feet above the river. As an approachable 2 day trip, Santa Elena Canyon is an excellent introduction to multi-day river tripping. Stretch it out to a 3 or 4 day trip to really settle in to this beautiful place!

The most remote and least paddled canyon in Big Bend National Park, Mariscal Canyon’s unique geology is sure to stun paddlers who choose to float this narrow gap at the southern most tip of the Big Bend. The float begins after a long drive on the scenic “river road” to Talley and the shorter run takes out just after the canyon at Solis (11 miles) but there are options to extend and incorporate other interesting canyons such as San Vicente or Hot Springs and even tie into a Boquillas Canyon trip, making Talley the perfect launch for a customized week or more of adventure on the Rio Grande.

This 33-mile stretch of Wild and Scenic River begins in Big Bend National Park at Rio Grande Village. The first few miles bring paddlers past the small Mexican village of Boquillas and abruptly the river enters the dramatic canyon that cuts through the Caballo Muerto Mountains. Miles of epic scenery and awesome side canyons make Boquillas Canyon the most well rounded river trip for people who not only want to paddle, but want to hike and enjoy a longer trip. Due to the springs present before, and in the canyon, Boquillas is a viable option for a low-water canoe trip as there’s always just enough to float down-stream. The trip ends just outside the National Park at the Heath Canyon Ranch (La Linda). This beach is the launch for the Lower Canyons.

The Lower Canyons Is the ultimate Big Bend river trip and our absolute favorite. Launching in La Linda, this 83-mile-long expedition on the protected Rio Grande Wild & Scenic River takes paddlers through jaw dropping wilderness. The Lower Canyon’s un-paralleled remoteness lends to its reputation as one of the best canoe trips in North America. There are exciting rapids (some must be lined or portaged), hot springs along the river’s edge, incredible hiking opportunities, outstanding geology, dinosaur tracks, and more opportunities for adventure than one could expect. It is rare on a Lower Canyons trip to encounter any other humans. We don’t recommend this trip for absolute beginners.

The Rio Conchos is the main source of water for the Rio Grande River, and it’s reservoir releases determine the flows throughout the Big Bend. This life-giving river boasts one of the most spectacular canyons to paddle in the Big Bend region, Canon del Peguis. We meet in Presidio TX at our headquarters and cross into Ojinaga MX (passports required) and after a short drive we’re paddling into the 2000ft plus limestone uplift of the Seirra Madres. This trip is only done as a “boomerang” meaning we go upstream into and out of the canyon. Peguis Canyon trips can be done as a long single day or a multi-day trip.

The Devils River is a limestone bed, aquifer-fed Texas treasure and we’ve got a decade of experience on her. This can be a more difficult trip than some of our Rio Grande offerings, but we bring the same full service guided experience that you’de expect on any FWTO trip. Wether its a smallmouth bass fly fishing trip or a scenic float your looking for, The Devils doesn’t disapoint.
We like to run trips from spring through the summer and into early fall. When its too hot in the Big Bend, the sycamore shade and cool spring water make The Devils River about the most tolerable place to multi-day camp in Texas.
The booking process is nuanced and requires calling us and often booking far in advance. (5 months ideally, but check in if you’re interested)

The Pecos River is as grand as the lore surrounding it, truly one of the last wild places in the state. A Pecos trip offers great bass fishing, challenging rapids, and spectacular rock art and archaeological history. All this come at a price; Pecos River trips are hard both physically and logistically. We’re here to make it a little easier, (we wont paddle for you) by providing expert guidance and the camping experience you wont forget.. go fish, or explore while we set up and cook you a great meal. There are two down-river trip options: a 3 or 4 day option running the 34 miles from the confluence of Independence creek to the bridge at Pandale, or a 5 to 8 day float from Pandale on down.
Recommended early fall through winter., spring can be done but expect strong winds.

Temple Canyon refers to the first 11 miles of the lower canyons. Paddled as a two day, one night trip, usually when water levels are too low to run the stretches on the other side of the bend, is a spectacular and often over looked river trip. Towering limestone canyon walls and spacious sandy beaches make this trip a great option if your group is looking to do a single night canoe-camping trip.

The Chihuahuan desert is a land of extremes. Temperatures in far west Texas soar into the hundreds in summer and dip below freezing in the winter. Consider these weather conditions when packing for your trip. Moisture wicking or quick dry materials are ideal for river trips. In cold weather months, packing many layers is the way to go, as you can add or remove layers to remain comfortable. When its hot outside, long sleeves are the best way to protect from UV rays, most sunscreens are harmful to the river. Zinc based sunscreens are the best but nothing protects like clothing coverage. A wide brimmed hat is your best friend in the desert.
On all of our adventures we provide drinking water that can be dispensed from one of our igloo coolers we do not provide disposable bottles or cups. This means that it is imperative that all participants bring their own water bottle to drink from and refill. Insulated water bottles are ideal however any reusable vessel with a resealable lid is acceptable. Camel-baks are great for hiking trips but often are a hassle on river trips.
Having proper footwear on river trips is very important. As it is common to step in and out of your craft and into swift moving water, Crocs, flip-flops or slide sandals that can easily slip off are no good. Chacos, Tevas or other strap on sandals are great. Closed toe water-shoes such as Keens are great too and provide toe protection if desired. Plain old athletic shoes that can get wet and muddy are fine as-well. If the water is cold, neoprene socks or wool socks are effective in keeping toes warm. On long multi-day trips it is wise to bring a back-up pair of shoes or sandals.
On multi-day river trips we can provide the camp gear (tent, sleeping bag, ground pad) if requested, however we encourage you to bring your own if you are more comfortable with your sleep system.
